Mission StatementTo provide purified water using reverse osmosis technology for bathing and drinking to provide the ultimate health possibilities for all mankind. In order for this to happen, we have constantly sought to develop effective low-cost technology and have sought to avoid in our treatment process the use of chemicals that would further degrade our environment. This desire has led me to develop the combination of slowsand/nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technology. The water now being used around the world has problems from naturally occurring microorganisms called pathogens, which consist of viruses, bacteria and parasites. The water commonly being used in the world's cities towns and municipalities also contain man-made chemicals, some of which are created in the treatment process when chlorine is added. Volatile organics called trihalomethanes are created when chlorine is added to. This occurs chiefly with surface water because of the water's naturally-occurring dissolved organic content. Even if you chlorinate seawater the trihalomethanes occur. The chlorine combines with the dissolved organics in all surface water including seawater to form the trihalomethanes. Trihalomethanes Cause CancerTrihalomethanes at the EPA allowable limit of 100 parts per billion will cause cancer in one out of 1,200 people. Trihalomethanes are known carcinogens, cancer causing agents. "Its very difficult and expensive to remove trihalomethanes using conventional treatment methods. However, they can be virtually totally removed using slowsand nanofiltration technology at less than the cost of conventional methods. This is done by removing the dissolved organics BEFORE chlorine is added to the water. At present, health agencies require the addition of chlorine even to reverse osmosis purified water. However, I hope that in the future this practice will not be required. We have shown that we can remove pathogens for water using reverse osmosis purification without chemicals." Dangerous Drinking Means Dangerous Bathing"With trihalomethanes present in the water, its as dangerous to bathe in it as to drink it. Trihalomethanes are a volatile solvent that will easily go through a person's skin. The curves of the use of chlorine in water treatment throughout the world matches the curves of increases of cancer throughout the world. Not all cancer is caused by chlorine and trihalomethanes, but it indicates that cancer is the result of the chemical revolution that we live in . The use of chlorine also coincides with other man-made chemicals getting into our environment. "My mother died of stomach cancer in 1972. My first cousin who is the only brother I have, died at an early age of cancer. Both of them as well as many other close friends have died of cancer. All of them had a very healthy lifestyle other than the water that they drank. My friend Dell Talley died of cancer in 1982. He lived near Farmington, New Mexico. I knew it was because of the water - which contained THMs, uranium, nitrates and other carcinogenic materials. Cluff Starts Making Systems in his Garage"While working for the University of Arizona I set out to find alternative safe water supplies through providing reverse osmosis equipment not only for the municipality but also for the individual home, so that if the municipality fails to provide cancer risk-free water, the homeowner can install equipment himself that will not only provide good drinking water, but safe water to bathe in. "I found out about this problem back in 1987 when I went to Norm Peterson of the Arizona State Health Department and asked why the City of Phoenix did not deliver bottled water to all of its consumers for drinking to avoid trihalomethanes. Peterson responded "Delivering bottled water would only solve half the problem. Its as dangerous to bathe in Phoenix water as it is to drink Phoenix water." Nanofiltration Breakthrough Introduced at 1986 Kuwait Water Conference Since I was living in Phoenix at the time, I became immediately concerned for my self and my family's health. I asked which would be better, to take a bath or take a shower. Mr. Peterson responded if I took a bath, the trihalomethanes would have a better chance of going into my body through my skin. If I took a show it would enter my lungs through vapors. In his opinion it would not make much difference in danger between taking a shower or a bath. It was this situation that caused me to start looking into ways of providing safe bathing water in every home: including my own. Shortly thereafter I visited a water conference in Kuwait and learned of nanofiltration which was a new discovery. It was only commercialized in 1986. I actually started building home systems in my garage that I sold to my neighbors. When I retired in 1994, that's when I started Clean Water Products. Clean Water Products Versus Other Reverse Osmosis SystemsThe difference between our system and other is that we have the patented features of catalytic conditioners that use the carbon dioxide produced in the slow sand filter to eliminate calcium or magnesium scaling. The catalytic conditioner can be used without the slow sand and most waters have sufficient carbon dioxide to greatly reduce the calcium scaling even without the slowsand filter. |
